A new book review, and an election preview
Publishers Weekly reviews "The Exvangelicals," and voters go to the polls
First, more book news:
We are just over four months from publication of my first book - part memoir and part reporting, The Exvangelicals: Loving, Living, and Leaving the White Evangelical Church.
Thanks to Publishers Weekly for this great review:
“[A] clear-eyed look at the mass disaffiliation from evangelical churches and culture in recent years … a lucid picture of life inside the evangelical community and the complicated choice to leave.”

What do you mean, “off” year?
We are a year away from the 2024 election. But first…the 2023 election, of course - on Tuesday in several states!
I joined the NPR Politics Podcast on Monday to talk about the off-year elections, and why they matter.
Certainly, they matter for people in states like Ohio, Virginia, and Kentucky. And, the outcomes could offer important signs of what might be coming in 2024 - particularly with regard to voter turnout and energy around the abortion issue, which Democrats hope to keep harnessing.
Oh, and that other election
I’m back - as of late last week - from another round of reporting in New Hampshire ahead of Wednesday’s Republican debate in Florida. As we’ve reported, the field has been slowly shrinking, with former Vice President Mike Pence’s departure late last month.
I spent some time with former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, who’s been showing some promising signs in early-primary states but, like anyone not named Donald Trump, still looks like a longshot for the nomination. But, a lot can happen between now and Iowa - including another debate.
In case you’ve already lost count - or interest - this week will mark the third GOP debate of the 2024 presidential primary season.
We’ll have coverage of this week’s political news, as always, at npr.org, the NPR One app, and on your member station.
Always great to hear the country's foremost expert on abortion politics on the pod. And congrats on the great book review . . . can't wait to get my copy!
