I’m thrilled to announce that my first book, The Exvangelicals: Loving, Living, and Leaving the White Evangelical Church is an instant New York Times bestseller!
The book debuted at #14 on BOTH the Hardcover Nonfiction and Combined Print & E-Book Nonfiction lists publishing on April 7!
This is an amazing honor for any writer, and I’m tremendously grateful to everyone who helped make it happen: my agent, Margaret Riley King; my editor, Hannah Phillips and the rest of the amazing team at St. Martin’s Press; my husband, Greg; my children and extended family who’ve supported me; friends who’ve cheered me on (and several who encouraged me to write this book when I was wavering); colleagues who’ve offered advice and inspiration and picked up the slack while I’m on book tour; and you - countless readers and online friends who’ve bought The Exvangelicals and told your friends about it!
I’m writing this from a train in Illinois, as I continue a second round of my book tour (which will continue next month with another visit to the Midwest, and a swing through the West Coast).

Just finished your audiobook. Wow!! Just WOW! Congratulations Sarah. Thank you for sharing your story and the stories of so many. Today, while cleaning house in preparation for my mother’s visit for Easter services at my Presbyterian church, I cried, not for the trauma I suffered or relationships lost, but for “what might have been” had your childhood faith allowed you to have a relationship with Ernie, your grandfather’s longtime partner. Thanks again!
Congratulations Sarah! I really enjoyed it too.
