I don’t know exactly what next week will bring - but for me, this one has been about wedging in a reporting trip between Halloween and the midterms.
All the rushing around was worth it to see the boy dressed up in his “Apocalypse Survivor” costume - or as he quipped, for “Career Day.”
That’s bleak. But I’m hoping our elected leaders - especially the ones we elect next week - understand just how worried some of us are - especially our kids and young adults - about the future. The future of economy, civil rights, the climate, democracy.
There’s so much to keep track of as we head into this election.
On my beat alone, reproductive rights policy, it’s nonstop: in St. Louis this week, I filed a story about a new mini-trend - mobile abortion clinics; reported on Indiana Dr. Caitlin Bernard suing her state attorney general, Todd Rokita, for allegedly going after her abortion patients’ medical records; and gathered material for one more which you’ll see after the midterms.
As always when on the road, I recorded my voiceovers with help of a radio reporter’s pillow fort.
One of the silver linings of the sometimes dizziness-inducing speed of #reporterlife was squeezing in dinner with a good friend in St. Louis, and walking through the city’s beautiful Lafayette Park - absolutely gorgeous this time of year.
A brief respite in the midst all of all the chaos leading up to the midterms. Speaking of which, we’ll have coverage and analysis on all NPR platforms next week. I spent some time on Friday prepping for that assignment from an Amtrak train somewhere in Virginia on my way home to my children.
But first, I’m preparing for a weekend of being a mom: competitive rowing (Thing 1) and somewhat less competitive bowling (Thing 2) - and for me, more midterm prep and some book revising. This weekend I hope you can take a moment to reflect, and to enjoy the leaves and your families and friends...
…And remember to vote!!
