I’m in a brief lull between interviews (working on the weekend, #reporterlife) and I wanted to pop in quickly to draw your attention to a piece we published overnight, about another Texas abortion case that looks like it could have broad repercussions:
In short: a Galveston County, Texas man has brought a wrongful death lawsuit against three friends of his now-ex-wife, accusing them of helping her end her pregnancy last year using pills. He’s seeking at least a million dollars from each of them.
We’re still teasing out all of the implications, but the biggest thing I noticed right away is that it’s not pointing to S.B. 8 - the law that allows private citizens to sue anyone believed to be involved in “aiding or abetting” an illegal abortion.
For more: please check out the piece, and listen this afternoon to NPR’s All Things Considered - when I’ll have much more. (I stayed up into the wee hours reading through the lawsuit and writing a summary, and I’m spending today talking to lawyers about what it could mean - I’ll share all of that reporting this evening.)
And as a reminder, it was just days ago that five Texas women came forward to sue the state, claiming Texas’ abortion bans put their health and lives at risk when they were denied abortions while facing medical crises.
